Developing Osprey Charging hubs.
An inside look at the creation of our ultra-rapid EV charging hubs.
At Osprey Charging, we are enhancing the EV charging landscape by developing easy-to-use ultra-rapid charging hubs across the UK. These hubs feature at least six charge points in an accessibly designed layout, 24/7 customer support, and dynamic load-balancing technology that can deliver up to 300kW of power for a charge time of less than 20 minutes. Throughout 2023, we've rapidly expanded our network, installing over 500 rapid or ultra-rapid chargers and significantly improving the nation's charging infrastructure.
Construction of a hub.
Building an ultra-rapid EV charging hub from the ground up.
Building an ultra-rapid charging hub might sound complex, but working with Osprey, it's a simple and smooth process. We take care of the entire journey from inception to operation and maintenance, making it easy and hassle-free for landlords while ensuring minimal disruption to the site during construction.
Designing the charging hub is a critical step in the process. Osprey's design team collaborates closely with landlords to create layouts that maximise space while fitting in with the existing surroundings. Each site is unique, tailored to the landlord's requirements, ensuring an efficient and accessible design that conforms to industry-leading accessibility standards.
Construction begins after all off-site civil work is complete. The Osprey team makes every effort to maintain the location's aesthetics and minimise any disturbances during the installation process. The precise area is excavated before heavy-duty cables are safely laid underground, and all charging infrastructure is delivered and installed.
Once the chargers and infrastructure are in place, the hub needs to be energised. This process connects the charging hub and associated electrical infrastructure such as a substation to the high voltage grid and is managed by the Distribution Network Operator (DNO). The timeline here can be influenced by the DNO's speed, and delays may occur due to their availability.
Before the site is commissioned, our final phase includes a focus on reinstating the ground to equal or better condition, and putting the finishing touches in place. This phase ensures that the site is ready for customers to visit. It involves the installation of fencing to screen the electrical infrastructure, bay markings painted on the charging bays, and the placement of clear and informative signage to guide EV drivers.
Before the site goes live, we conduct full testing on-site, including a thorough inspection by one of our engineers. This ensures that both the chargers and site are in top condition. Once completed, the chargers are available to drivers via the Osprey app and other third-party services.
The process of setting up an ultra-rapid charging hub is complex, but Osprey's expert handling simplifies and accelerates the process for our landlord partners. From conception to completion, Osprey's expertise ensures a smooth transformation to a cleaner, greener, and more EV-friendly future.
