Year in review: 2023.
We take a moment to reflect on the dynamic landscape of the electric vehicle (EV) industry in 2023.
The past year has been a testament to the surging momentum of sustainable transport, with compelling numbers painting a vivid picture of progress.
The noteworthy BEV surge.
A prominent highlight of 2023 lies in the significant surge in Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) registrations, recording a remarkable 17.8% Year-on-Year (YoY) increase. The culmination of this growth saw over 939,000 BEVs traversing the roads of the United Kingdom by the conclusion of the year.
The rise of ultra-rapid charging.
When it comes to EV charging infrastructure, the past year was characterised by an unparalleled expansion, with ultra-rapid chargers (150kW and higher) emerging as the cornerstone of this progress. These high-powered charging stations played a pivotal role in shaping the unfolding narrative of public charging networks, providing users with swifter and more efficient charging alternatives.
The need for speed.
Despite the growth in charging station capacity, charging speeds are trailing behind expectations. The average peak charging speed for EVs registered in 2023 stands at 142kW, with the mean charging speed averaging at 101kW.
As we enter 2024, these trends act as a compass for the EV landscape. BEV registrations echo a growing eco-consciousness, and the dominance of ultra-rapid chargers anticipates an industry gearing up for a burgeoning EV user base.
