The rise of electric vehicles is transforming the way we think about transportation, and as more drivers switch to EVs, the demand for public charging infrastructure is growing rapidly. At Osprey, our strategy is to install the right chargers at the right locations, so that drivers can get the speed to match their dwell time. We're constantly analysing usage patterns and customer behaviours to inform this strategy and deliver the best possible experience for EV drivers.

What are the busiest days of the week for public rapid charging?

One interesting trend we've observed is the weekly pattern of rapid charging usage. While vehicle traffic in general tends to be higher on weekends, with a peak on Sundays, we've found that our busiest day for rapid charging is actually Friday, ahead of the weekend travel. This makes sense, as more drivers are likely to be taking longer trips on weekends, and want to top up their batteries before hitting the road.

Another interesting pattern we've observed is the dip in charging activity that occurs a few days after Monday bank holidays. While bank holidays are typically preceded by the usual peak in charging activity on the Friday, we've found that charging levels drop off after the holiday (three days after, more accurately), suggesting that many drivers may either still be on holiday or driving less that week.

These usage patterns have important implications for public charging infrastructure. As demand for charging grows, it's essential that charging networks invest in multi-charger hubs of ultra-rapid charge points that can maximize availability and turnover of bays. At Osprey, we've developed load-balancing hubs that distribute available power from the grid across multiple charge points, allowing us to make more charging bays available than a traditional setup on the same grid connection. This ensures that multiple cars can be plugged in at once, without any power being wasted on slower charging cars, and helping to ease queues during busy times.

As the electric vehicle revolution continues to gather momentum, we're excited to be at the forefront of this transformation, working to deliver cutting-edge charging solutions that meet the evolving needs of EV drivers. By analysing usage patterns, listening to our customers, and staying ahead of the curve on technology and infrastructure, we're confident that we can deliver the right infrastructure for drivers, helping accelerate the transition to a cleaner, and more sustainable future for all.
